The Budget's on 28 October and the rumours started weeks ago, like they always do.
Pensions might change. Inheritance tax might change. Somebody's read that somebody's heard that the Treasury is “looking at” something, and off it goes.
Every autumn I end up having some version of the same conversation. Should I do something now, just in case?
I completely understand why people ask. Nobody wants to be the one who could have done something and didn't. That feels like the worst outcome.
In my experience it usually isn't, though. The people who come off worst tend to be the ones who did something in a hurry because of a rumour.
Taking a chunk out of a pension before they needed it, because they were worried about a change. Once it's out you can't just pop it back in. Or giving money away earlier than they'd planned, before they'd really thought about whether they could afford to.
And then, quite often, the thing they were worried about never happened.
Some of the rumours do come true, of course. Even then it's very rare that the right answer is a big decision you can't undo, made in the week before.
So my advice is pretty boring, honestly. Wait and see what's actually announced. Then sit down with someone who knows your plan and look at it properly. If something does need doing there's normally time to do it right.
And if you're feeling that pull to act before the 28th, ring us first. Please. That's what we're here for.
